Frequently Asked Questions
-
How do I know if I have a hearing loss?
Hearing Loss typically has a gradual onset as we age. It’s a good idea to check in with yourself and note any changes over time. Some common indicators are family members mentioning that you’re listening to the TV loudly, needing to ask others to repeat themselves more often, and struggling to hear others in noisy/restaurant environments.
-
Is my hearing test really free?
Yes! It really is. At Robertson Hearing Centre, we’re passionate about providing thorough and professional service to all clients. We are here to help you hear more out of life and want to make that as easy as possible.
-
How often should I get my hearing tested?
We recommend folks who are 60+ have their hearing tested every year to monitor any changes as you age. Hearing Loss typically has a gradual onset, meaning that it’s harder for you to pinpoint yourself without having proper tests done.
-
What causes hearing loss?
There are many different things that can contribute to hearing loss, but the most common one is age. As we age, the outer hair cells in our ears die off, leading to hearing loss in the high frequencies. Other contributing factors can include but are not limited to excessive noise exposure, surgery, oto-toxic medications, and certain medical conditions like Meneire’s or Measles.
-
Do I need hearing aids if I have a hearing loss?
We certainly recommend it! In all honesty, it depends on the level of loss that you are experiencing. Some people who have a very mild loss can get away without hearing aids until the loss progresses. However, almost everyone will benefit from hearing aids as early as they are needed because our brain will forget how to process sounds the longer it has been deprived of them. You can avoid a difficult readjustment period by wearing hearing aids earlier!
-
What types of hearing aids are available?
There are many different types of hearing aids with varying levels of technology available. We offer a wide range from completely-in-canal hearing aids to behind-the-ear. Hearing aids can be rechargeable or battery-operated based on client needs. We pride ourselves in being a fully independent clinic, meaning that we will work with you to determine the best hearing aid power level and style for your hearing loss.
-
Is there a way to cure my hearing loss?
In some cases of hearing loss that is caused by a conductive component (excessive ear wax, middle ear infections, or ossicular damage) there are medications or surgeries that can be performed that will correct the hearing loss or bring it closer to what it was previously. In those cases, we will help you communicate your needs with your healthcare provider. When hearing loss is due to damage of the inner ear (dying hair cells), hearing aids are the solution to try and return your hearing closer to what it was before the loss.
-
Can hearing loss be prevented?
To answer simply, yes and no. Noise induced hearing loss can be prevented by avoiding excessively noisy environments OR ensuring that you wear well fitting custom noise blockers (ear plugs). Some medications can also contribute to hearing loss. Most hearing loss however, is due to aging and is part of the normal process. Every person’s hearing loss is different!
